Week 6: Self Assembling Robots by Roger Call

When we think of the future we always think of robots zooming around doing all of our tasks for us and making our lives easy.  However, one the most complex and impressive things a robot could do would be to repair and reproduce itself and its fellow robots.  This thought both amazing and scary, could be either both the beginning of a fascinating new age of technology or the end of the human race.  This day is still a long way off, as scientists and engineers have much yet to discover before robots threaten the existence of humans.

Scientists and researchers in the UK are working on a group of robots that work together to accomplish tasks.  These robots individually are very small and incapable of much work, but in numbers can theoretically achieve quite a lot.  The individual robots work together to move and accomplish tasks, and will be able to repair and duplicate themselves as the robots see fit.  This robot can be seen at:

As the scientist in the video said, the robots are meant to problem solve on their own.  One plausible situation in which the robot could utilize its own thinking pattern would be to save victims stranded in buildings after a natural disaster or fire.  The robot could work alongside humans to search for and save survivors.  From the looks of the video, the project seems to be a long way from its goal, but some progress is definitely better than no progress.  If this idea does come into full swing, the possibilities are endless.  The robots could be launched into space to mars or some other distant planet.  Once on the planet, the robots could explore and expand, repairing themselves as they transmit information about the planet to us back on earth.  As they are independent, the robots could continue to explore the planet longer and better than a human could.

This leaves us with the highly debated topic of, will the robots take over?  Like in the Terminator, robots too advanced are developed and soon take control of the defense network, eventually leading to the downfall of the human race as “Skynet” the name of the ultimate robot program takes over.  According to most scientists, such a takeover would be highly unlikely at the current state of technology, and as technology advances I can’t help but to believe scientists will create a fail safe switch of some type, for example in the movie Bladerunner, the short lifespan on the “replicants.”  Some method of preserving order in case the worst case scenario did occur.  However, as we continue to advance, a robot so smart may be created it could bypass its fail safe mechanism and begin world domination…
