During class on Thursday, Professor Vensa showed us short clips that demonstrated the use of robotics in industries and entertainment. In those clips, special effects were the main attraction, but in depth what we saw was mathematics. I found “Beautiful Mind” particularly interesting because it was unlike the other clips where the special effects were dramatic and to some extent like “War of the World” or “Time Machine” where there were physical “robots.” “Beautiful Mind” was based on more of a mathematical computation and wisely presented through technology. In the other clips, robotics seems to be parallel to violence. I think this promotes a negative connotation for the use of robotics.
What the clips portrayed is also parallel to Professor Vensa’s lecture. Professor Vensa mentioned that with technology comes violence. When dated back to ancient times, prior to technology, weapons were simple and straightforward, but now time technology, we are able to further advance what we already have. Just like in the clips, robots are also capable of killing in reality. The government has made over 4000 robots and has placed them in Iraq. These robots are programmed to kill their enemies under human order. Further researches are being conducted to program them so they can decide when to fire at their enemies without human supervision. Researcher Ronald Arkin from Georgina Tech believes that “battlefield robots can be made a smart as human soldiers.” Arkin said that, “We cannot make them that generally intelligent, they will be more like dogs, used for specialized situations.” But I believed they can be more brutal than humans and may perhaps create a disaster when it malfunctions.
Robot Arm Race
Apart from the robotics shown in the clips, I’m more interested in the medical aspect of robotic usage. Robotics is often used in surgery to assist surgeons and to provide accuracy and stability. CyberKnife® is a new technique used at the USC Norris Cancer Hospital. A software is used to locate the tumor and guides the robotic arm at a certain angle to permit radiation to the tumor site where it is usually unreachable with other medical approach. Another robotic technology in the medical field is the “da Vinci Surgical System.” This system consists of two robotic arms and a camera system that allows the surgeon to perform cardiac surgery without making an 8- 10-inch incision through the chest wall.
While robotics and technology have both its positive and negative sides, I think the most important thing is how we use it. If we use it in war, the causality will rise dramatically. Although it might be intimating to our enemies, we still risk possibilities of malfunction and resisting orders. Like Arkin said, robots don’t yet have the intelligence to determine what is right and what is wrong. By the time technology is so advanced as to robots are as intelligence, if not more than humans, the clips we saw might become a reality. When robotics is used for a good cause, then it might be life-saving and a blessing to have. Since it is a “machine” and it doesn’t have feelings, it will be very efficient, especially in industries.
