1. After reading Salen & Zimmerman’s taxonomy of game definitions. explain which definition(s) appeals to you most?
2. How would you define a game in your own words?
3. What is your opinion of Costikyan’s definition of games, is it too broad , too narrow,which aspects of his definition do agree with and which do you disagree with? Are puzzles games? Is second life a game? What do you make of his ideas about narrative in games? And his notions of color and competition? What about his idea that games should be considered “art”?

Homebrew Game Presentation
DUE IN CLASS Tuesday Jan 13th

Prepare an in class presentation (10 mins) describing and demonstrating an unusual game that it is likely the class has not heard of or played. Provide the class with the game’s general description and rules. If the game is playable in a classroom situation, prepare a playable demo.

The game you are presenting should be either:
1. A game you and/or your friends invented in your childhood
2. A game specific to your family
3. A game that is specific to a certain local (country, town, schoolyard, city)
4. A game project you designed at UCLA
5. An obscure game that you’ve played that belongs to a gaming subculture (examples: urban rollerblade paintball, your house rules for Caveman Dungeons and Dragons LARPING, Killer, Blind man’s Chess..)
