My idea was to show process of an action. I decided to pick two common actions and one more complex action for contrast. Although the card cutting appears more complex to the average viewer, it is really 2nd nature to me as I have been doing it for so long. The typing one shows the process of learning how to type, from one finger, to two hands and two fingers, to both hands and all ten fingers. I also tried to do one with someone writing on paper, but it wasn’t nearly as interesting or visually appealing. I decided to use black and white photos so there would be no colors distracting the viewer from looking at the forms and action in the images. This uses process in a double meaning, first it shows a process from beginning to end and second I use a process to show it. I shot photos using burst mode on a digital camera and converted them to black and white. Then I cropped the images to squares and then scaled them down to a size that would fit on a 3 x 3 matrix. It creates a visually appealing image while still showing form. I gained inspiration from Muybridge’s first photography of motion that later became the basis of film. |
