For this assignment, I wanted to experiment with how sound could be utilized as a visual expression. I have always found it interesting how computer programs translate sound into visible illustrations. Interesting shapes and lines emerge depending on the sound/voice/instrument being recorded. I decided to take this concept a step further by inventing a process for using sound as a tool for creating an abstract composition. I recorded myself playing single notes on a guitar, and then imported these images into Photoshop. I then arranged the waveforms into what I felt to be an visually appealing composition.  The process is as follows:

1) Plug guitar (or other instrument) into a recording device/program that supplies a visual representation of what has been recorded.

2) Record.

3) Select a single note to play and strike this note three times.

4) Stop recording.

5) Repeat steps two through four two more times. Three separate regions representing the notes just played will result. Color each region.

6) Take a screen shot of each region.

7) Import into Photoshop or other graphics program.

8) Create a square or rectangular area to work in.

9) Open each captured waveform image.

10) Using the magic wand tool, cut out each waveform and place on the colored shape.

11.) Arrange into an aesthetically pleasing composition.
