For the electrophotography assignment, I chose to work with oil and soy sauce. I liked how completely absurd the idea of copying liquid seemed, and at first I had no idea how this might be accomplished. However, it seemed like an interesting challenge, and one that might produce interesting results.
I enjoyed how the unruly nature of the oil injected a level of spontaneity into the composition. I could not 'arrange' the oil. I was limited in terms of what I could do physically to the liquid in the bag, aside from adding and subtracting, poking and prodding. This forced me to rely entirely on the visual capabilities of the copy machine.
By breaking up the soy sauce into smaller bubbles, I was able to create an illusion of texture. This illusion was then enhanced through zooming in and stretching the image. The copy machine I was using provided the option of enlarging horizontally and vertically at different ratios. I experimented with different ratios, until I found several that I felt were visually interesting and appealing. Contrast was then provided through utilizing the positive/negative feature on the copier.
My final composition is a compilation of five images. Separately, the images have been enlarged extensively vertically, but minimally horizontally. Contrast was created through each band alternating positive and negative. The image has been arranged in straight, horizontal bands in an effort to balance the flowing, irregular shapes created by the oil and soy sauce. |
