exercise B
electrophotography
for this assignment, i chose to play with an artichoke. i chose an artichoke because i did not think that anyone else would chose this particular vegetable (apparently i have a poor sense about these things, courtney :) and i just find artichokes interesting. i like their general shape and i like that you can pull them apart.
in doing the assignment i discovered that making an interesting composition with an artichoke was more difficult than i had originally expected. i played with moving the object while the light was passing over it as well as brightness, backlighting and cutting out and recoping the object in different ways.
none of this, however, was as interesting as the 1-inch thick strips that my roomate's photocopier kept spitting out after it had copied the main image. no matter where on the glass i positioned the object and/or paper, there would be a second page with a slightly distorted strip of copy on it. some of these strips had discernable images on them and others just interesting designs. i decided to cut them out and paste them all next to one another on top of one of the compositions i had made. two 1-inch strips of the composition are allowed to show through.
my main goal with this assignment was to make something that was visually interesting and appealing and did not look like i simply stuck an artichoke in a photocopying machine.
this
is another composition that i thought was interesting, also using the leftover
strips.
