anamorphosis
For this assignment, I chose to distort an image of an avocado. I chose an avocado because it is an easily recognizable shape and because I like avocadoes. I thought it would be funny to put such a common object on an uncommon scale.
I found the source image online and then cropped it. I cropped it so that the avocado in the foreground (the one I wanted to focus on) could be as distorted as possible.
I chose the table in my apartment to photograph the avocado because avocadoes are food and food is commonly found on tables. I originally had printed out a larger image and put it on the floor to photograph it (as it did not fit on my table); but I felt as though the floor was not an appropriate context for the avocado. I then scaled down the image and put it on my table. The photograph worked best at a distance of about three and and a half feet. Strategic placement of the tablecloth to aid in making the avocado appear more three-dimensional came after a few trial photos.
I am overall happy with my results. However, I wonder what the photos would look like if the avocado was in color. I am considering watercoloring it and retaking the photos; possibly adding some people to further emphasize the avocado's large size.
