Because I am a big geek. Or something. Each morning I check through a few dozen weblogs that talk about the web, the technologies that drive the web, and the people behind the rapid and fascinating development of the web. To me, web design consists of hundreds of tiny, surmountable problems that when solved cohesively, make information and personal expression public, open, and more democratic. I like the marriage of computer science and aesthetics, especially since the web is often tipped more towards the aesthetic.
I started learning HTML in seventh grade with a copy of Learn HTML in 24 Hours! from the library. I kept it up through high school, teaching myself PHP and MySQL the summer before junior year. I have a pretty solid mastery of (x)HTML and CSS, a working knowledge of Javascript, and my new passion is Ruby and the Rails framework. I’m hoping this class will help me development my design sense, because it’s something I struggle with on every project. If nothing else, the projects from this class will probably fit nicely in my portfolio.
