1. Style and Design exploration
Sources of inspiration and techniques: A recent visit to the LA Watts
towers inspired my concept’s evolution. The towers were fashioned
organically with bits of material coming together to create a solid
and beautiful structure. Each facet was built by hand, growing over
time into a complex series of links and bridges. The building process
reminded me of the internet’s method of development, so I approached
some of my representation with curving linked forms achieved through photography. My
visuals were further directed by the idea of suggesting some of the
computer’s internal energy and data usually obscured from view. The process
of data movement and its form as energy was depicted through abstracted
computer-generated 3-D graphics. Using the mediums of photography and
painting small fragments of human features were interspersed in the work to
convey the human element behind technology. The abstract imagery utilized
was also an attempt to avoid associating the internet with any particular
group of people or computer hardware. The colors chosen for the site stem
from an idea of pink representing energy and blue being a calm contrast.   The sans-serif typefaces selected
reflect the curved forms in my design and the ubiquity of sans-serif
typefaces on the internet. The websites listed here have a mostly flat
color layout with a sort of hint of a texture or design behind the main
surface. This look seems appropriate for my content, since the focus of
our websites should be the research articles and not the imagery we generate.
The site will be designed as a resource for artists and designers who
are interested in the internet and web technologies. It will serve to educate
visitors and the more unconventional design to appeal to designers and artists.
Designers comprise a significant number of internet users, since every website
has designers, so this seemed like a broad target audience. I also wanted to
address the theme of technological and social trends, and since designers have
a large part in shaping future internet technologies this fits with the theme.
