Assignment 4 (Midterm): Individual Project and Artist Statement

Development of ideas:
Idea #1:
For this assignment I would like to create a website for a visual exploration of a painting. I picked a painting by Pieter Bruegel ``The Tower Of Babel', 1563. The Tower of Babel is symbolic of the Roman civilization -- Eternal City, intended by Caesars to last forever. Its decay and ruins symbolize the vanity of earthly efforts. This project would reflect my own impression when I look at the painting. I would like to experiment with color as well as the subject of the painting.

I want this project to incorporate the structure and special features available through Flash. After thinking about the project described above, I decided that plain HTML and Java Script would be a perfect medium for it. Therefore, I decided to do something else for which Flash would be a perfect tool to express my ideas.

... and here is what I came up with next:
Idea #2 (Final):
The Artist Statement:
The project is a visualization of the Kinetic Monte Carlo simulation of the Point Island model of the epitaxial growth. Current simulation is a simplified model of a more complex program on which I have been working for several months now under the supervision of Professor Ratsch in the Mathematics department. The simulation describes a process of depositing atoms on the lattice spacially at random. We are studying properties of the islands formed by the atoms on a given lattice. The results of the simulation are important in the area of Nano Computing.

The artpiece is an atempt to utilize Flash in visualizing the islands formed on the lattice. Different colors are assigned to corresponding heights of islands. Thus, we are able to trace the distribution of the atoms on the lattice via the color of each site.

I believe that the possibility of obtaining and noticing some order in a completely random process is truly fascinating. I hope that my project would provide an insight into the world of scientific discovery.

To interact with the simulation the user has to set the values for the parameters in the input boxes and click the i n p u t button. This will initialize the lattice. To start the simulation hit the s t a r t button. You may hit it several times again until the color of every site is red. By rolling over the site, the user can see the actual number of atoms in the current site, that is to which number the color of the site corresponds. To restart the simulation hit the r e s e t button. To input new parameters refresh the screen.
