Assignment 1: Due 04.02.08

On an 18" by 24" paper, explore the whole page with a single continuous freehand line. The line should not change thickness to help develop control of the pencil, the line should be approximately 30 feet long, the line should not cross itself, the line should not be straight, and the distance (negative space) between different parts of the line should be uniform. When you look at the page, it should be uniform and appear like a wallpaper.

Assignment 2: Due 04.07.08

-Finish continuing-line drawing - FINAL
-Draw your 18 x 18 inch square in perspective at 3/4 scale.
The front (closest) line must be 2 inches from bottom of the page
Label and draw in 1) Horizon Line 2) Vanishing Point 3) Orthogonals

Assignment 3: Due 04.14.08

-Complete the construction of 6 by 6 by 6 unit transparent cube on top of the 18 x 18 inch square. Fill pproximately 50% of the cubicles with a single diagonal plane in any direction - FINAL

-Using your transparent cube as the base, remove approximately 25 to 50% of the cubicles to create an interesting structure. The structure should be able to sit realistically on its base and should be completely opaque (i.e. you will not be able to see the interior of the structure) - FINAL

Assignment 4: Due 04.16.08

-Make model of invisible cube, add a surface color, and render it out for printing.

-Print on A3 Size color laser, your imaginary cube sitting on the chair from your particular viewpoint.

-Label submission with x,y,z values of your eye relative to the cube.

-Save all project files in the network drive: /myclasses/S08-23/drop/Maya_Project

Assignment 5:
For Monday 04.21.08: 1 print of one structure with visual analysis.
For Wednesday 04.23.08: Bring all 6 prints - FINAL

1)Image Compositing

-Composit images of 3 structures from a 10x10x10 unit cube (each part should sit flat on the ground)

-Replace the Richard Serra sculpture on the sand area of the front lawn with each of your 3 structures. (light the scene appropriately in Maya; structures should compose at least 50% of the vertical image space.

2)Printing

-3 Prints - 1 of each structure (A3 size, color)

-3 Prints - showing visual analysis of the scene w/ horizon line and vanishing point
(A3 size, color) ** Attach extra paper on top if the horizon line and vanishing point are outside of the original image **

Assignment 6: Due 4.30.08
1) Mask a 3:4 ratio rectangle on a wood grain surface (photograph)
2) Make two interprative studies of a wood grain surface using only single line width lines.
3) Bring in photo+ 2 studies
*** Bring digital camera next week.

Assignment 7: Due 5.05.08
Complete one or more first drafts of your log drawing in Illustrator. The entire drawing should be completed using only lines (curved, straight or otherwise). In general, line stroke weight should range from .5 to 1 point, unless there is a particular reason for a thicker or lighter stroke weight. Use layers as necessary if you have different versions of a drawing that you are working with. We will meet and talk individually in class on Monday about your work.

Assignment 8: Due 5.07.2008
1) Due - Final Log Drawing
B/W Tabloid print-out of Log Drawing in Duplicate.

Assignment 9: Due 5.19.2008
Complete one or more first drafts of your chair drawing in Illustrator. The entire drawing should be completed using only lines (curved, straight or otherwise). In general, line stroke weight should range from .5 to 1 point, unless there is a particular reason for a thicker or lighter stroke weight. Use layers as necessary if you have different versions of a drawing that you are working with. We will meet and talk individually in class on Monday about your work.

Assignment 10: Due 5.21.2008
-Final Chair Drawing - print to A3, Black/White - two copies
-Meet at 2:00 PM at the Hammer (Wilshire and Westwood) in front of the bookstore - bring your Student ID.

Due 5.28.2008
-Drawing Study of Albrect Durer's Last Supper
-Drawing Should be done on top of copy in black ink
-Drawing should show imaginative visual analysis

Assignment 11: For Monday and Wednesday 2008

For Monday
: Keep working in the Illustrator file. Individual critiques on Monday.

For Wednesday - Individual meetings (see below for time). Meet in 5240 (classroom)
-Final Durer Drawing is due at your Final Critique - print to vertical format, 13 by 19 inch Photo Supreme Double-Matte paper (reserved for our class at the print desk), and on the small Epson ink jet printer (must use the Print Drop and the Print Desk assistant for this printer) - two copies.
-Bring entire portfolio from the quarter to your Final Critique.
