Content:
This course is a continued introduction to computer programming within
the context of image and interaction. Each student’s foundation
in basic programming will serve as a platform from which to explore diverse
media applications including video, sound, print, networking, data visualization,
and other potential areas of their own choice. Each student will gain
experience with diverse software materials and advanced programming techniques.
A public presentation at the end of the course will allow participants
to share their work with the UCLA community. This course is designed for
students with previous computer programming experience. The prerequisite
for the class is 252A or equivalent experience.
Assignments:
The principle activity for the course is a series of three exercises followed
by a final project. The exercises combine concept and technique and focus
on different aspects of the subject. The topic of the final project may
be selected by each student in consultation with the professor. There
will be a series of critiques where participants present their work and
receive feedback from the professor and the class. Exercises 1-3 will
be documented online for a mid-term critique. In addition to the exercises
and final project, there are eight reading assignments supported by discussions
in class and on the website.
Evaluation:
The grading is based on the exercises (80%), and on the participant's
active participation during the class meetings (20%). Exercises will be
evaluated based on their concept and quality of implementation. Feedback
will be primarily qualitative but numeric scores will also be given for
each exercise. If an exercise or project is turned in late, points will
be taken off each day so that it will receive a zero if one week late.
More than two absences without the Professor or TA's prior permission
will lower the participants final grade by one unit (e.g. an A will become
an B). With each additional unexcused absence, the grade will drop an
additional unit. All exercises must be completed to pass the course. In
addition, participants must attend at least three D|MA sponsored lectures
during the quarter.
The grade breakdown follows:
10% Participation
10% Reading Discussions (online and in class)
30% Exercises 1, 2, 3
50% Exercise 4 |
