Parameterized Form + Macro/Micro

This project uses the idea of an architectural space frame as the basis for a new type of malleable material. Software is used to explore the implications of manipulating this new material. The macro composition is the entire space frame material, while the individual frame elements allow for micro adjustments. The pull of an individual element on it's neighboring cells can be changed thus creating a range from smooth undulating transitions to abrupt changes of the space frame module.

Each space frame and visual exploration presented below was produced starting with this custom written applet. From processing the space frame was output as a dxf file and taken into rhino in order to set the view. Rendering was done with rhino and all line work was further refined in illusrator.

The range of scales that a space frame can operate at was also an important part of this investigation. The space frame was used as a framework to generate scales ranging from a wall assembly to a metropolis. Click on any of the following images to see a larger version.
