EXERCISE G

With this exercise I wanted to record the motion of smoke. I considered several ways of doing this. Recording someone smoking a cigarette would not have worked since they would move around to much and not be able to smoke for 24 minutes. Recording a smoke stack would have provided a lot of smoke, but wouldn’t have changed very much over the 24 minutes.

In the end, I used a stick of incense. Not only did this last almost exactly 24 minutes, but also provided interesting smoke the entire time. The smoke curled and twisted while the stick showed the time as it burnt down.

Instead of looping the one second video of it burning I used a feature QuickTime calls palindrome. When the video reaches the end it plays the opposite way, which felt more appropriate for the subject.
