Final proposal: portfolio

The idea of mapping interested me, but as a senior, I could not turn down an opportunity to work on a portfolio site. Because of this, I have developed a proposal that tries to combine the two. I plan to use maps as the main navigation of the site to create a feeling of virtual space. Different categories will be different locations. Currently, I have two main aesthetic approaches in mind. The first is the primary one, and the other may be combined to it or dropped:

I. Land-masses
I will use land-masses, possibly abstracted, or topographic, to represent different sections. These will possibly labeled as fictional countries, with sub categories as fictional states or cities (depending on if it can keep from looking corny). It should look abstract, not resembling any land-mass people would recognize. I also don't mind if it is so abstract that it does not even make people think of any type of geographic map, as long as it is visually appealing.

The sections will likely go as follows:
1. Print
2. Motion/Video/Audio
3. Web
4. Drawing/Painting/Sculpture
5. other (possibly 3D/other)
6. Bio
7. Contacts

II. Metro-rail
Unlike the first idea, this one sets out to literally represent an area. I would use the LA metro-rail system map (or a similar reproduction, to avoid any lawsuits) as the navigation, changing the names of the stops to categories. Once at a "metro stop," the various selections can be represented as various bus lines. This will create the feeling of travel through a virtual space, re-appropriating a map many of us are familiar with locally. I realize that using a recognizable map obviously brings up associations. I don't mind if it associates me with Los Angeles, since I've lived in the area my whole life, or with public transportation, because to me it represents accessibility.
