Summary
BitTorrent is a peer-to-peer file sharing system that is quickly becoming the method of choice for publishing and sharing large files across the Internet. It is distinct from other P2P programs, such as Limewire and Kazaa, in that breaks down files into smaller packets of information, generally 256KB, and uses a protocol developed by creator Bram Cohen. There is no central server taking the burden of distribution, since the information is shared among peers, with upload and download speeds being "tit for tat." The protocol is also sophisticated enough to recognize, then try to acquire the rarest pieces first. Because of this, it can be used as a low cost and efficient way for anyone to publish digital files that would otherwise require massive amounts of bandwidth and robust server systems.
